When the UC Merced Bobcats hosted their rst intercollegiate varsity game in Joseph Edward Gallo Recreation and Wellness Center, energy buzzed through the crowd.

he women’s volleyball team defeated Paci c Union College in four sets that night, powered by freshman outside hitter Valeria Galvan. e Madera native, UC Merced’s rst recruited student-athlete, delivered 24 kills and 17 digs. “It was my rst college game and representing the Central Valley at the newest UC felt powerful,” Galvan recalled. “ e gym was packed from wall to wall, and the local news even lmed our coin toss. e energy and excitement were through the roof, and ending the night with a win made it unforgettable.”
