WHERE IS
In the Middle of Everything UC Merced is located in the center of California’s northern Central Valley. Merced is your quintessential small town, with a tree-lined downtown filled with shops, restaurants and a theater, but with amenities that a larger town might have, such as a mall and larger eateries. Merced is also centrally located, which means that if you schedule a route north, south, east or west in your map app, you’ll run into a city or attraction that’s easy to get to. Gather your roommate and some friends and go skydiving in Lodi, check out marine life at Monterey Bay Aquarium, explore the diverse neighborhoods in San Francisco, go skiing at Dodge Ridge, or sit on the beach during the day and hit the boardwalk at night in Santa Cruz.
Yosemite: Our Majestic Neighbor
You know those photos on Instagram and Twitter of people hiking trails, climbing rocks and river rafting? There’s a good chance they’re snapping those selfies in Yosemite National Park, at Half Dome, El Capitan, or Bridalveil and Yosemite Falls. Merced is called the Gateway to Yosemite for a reason. We’re only 2 hours from Yosemite Valley. You also can take advantage of the Yosemite Area Regional Transportation System (YARTS), buses that will pick you up on campus and take you to the park; no driving required.

The Pre-Law subfield of the Political Sciencemajor focuses on the study of legal institutions and behavior of legal actors. The Merced Pre-Law Society provides resources that will help students get accepted into law school. The group is very active on campus, hosting a variety of events and collaborating with other clubs. They also provide information on different law schools, LSAT prep questions, admission sessions and law icebreakers.

»» Professor and biologist Miriam Barlow helped develop a method to restore the efficacy of antibiotics and help doc- tors deal with resistant bacteria. »» Through the World Heritage program in the School of Social Sciences, Humanities and Arts, students and faculty involved in a project titled “Bodie Digital Community - Connect with Your Past” designed and developed an augmented reality mobile app that brought to life the town of Bodie, a California State Historic Park that is at risk of being lost due to wildfires and lack of funding for conservation. »» Adjunct Professor Gabriela Loots is studying why certain can- cers prefer to metastasize to bone. Loots is trying to identify, characterize and potentially exploit the information pack- aged in different types of extracellular vesicles to determine if they can distinguish aggressive forms of breast cancer that rapidly spread in the body. »» Three students were selected as fellows for the Global Food Initiative to work on projects including increasing food re- covery, advancing food literacy and expanding experiential learning opportunities in food systems. »» Professor Danielle Edwards was part of a teamof researchers that made a discovery about two groups of giant Galapagos tortoises — they are actually two different species. »» Undergraduate mechanical engineering student Rebecca Quinte worked with Professor Andrea Joyce on a project that aims to shoo away leaf-footed bugs, insects that feed on the seeds of crops — research that could end up benefitting farmers in the Central Valley and beyond.

Regardless of grade level, all students at UC Merced have the opportunity to get internship positions at a variety of industry partners, nonprofit organizations and the Peace Corps. Many students have secured positions because of their involvement in research – something that is key to the UC Merced experience. World Heritage Research Experience Scholars Program: WHERE is a new one-year undergraduate research program for students across all academic disciplines. The program focuses on natural and cultural heritage, the legacy of the human past, and how it is reflected today in places, landscapes, and intangible aspects of our cultures. The UC Merced Bobcats compete in the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) and the California Pacific Conference (CAL-PAC) in men’s and women’s basketball, cross country, soccer and volleyball. University Housing UC Merced is proud to guarantee housing for one year to all incoming first year students meeting the necessary application and contracting deadlines stated at housing.ucmerced.edu . Residence halls offer computer labs with printers, study lounges, a laundry facility with an Internet notification system, a gaming center, a dance andmusic room, kitchens, outdoor barbecues and more. University housing is available to continuing students on a first-come, first-served basis.

Campus Safety UC Merced strives to keep the campus community as safe as possible. Our full-service UC Merced Police Department is always on call. Emergency blue lights, which are direct lines to the police dispatcher, are located all around campus. When to Apply You can start to work on your fall admission application on Aug. 1. The priority filing period is Nov. 1-30. Application Fees
The nonrefundable $70 application fee entitles you to apply to one UC campus. The fee for international students is $80. Fee waivers are available to students who qualify. You can apply for a fee waiver through the online admission application and be notified immediately if you qualify. You will need to provide your family’s income and the number of people supported by that income. Required Tests If you apply as a first year student, you must take the ACT with Writing or the SAT with Essay, or have previously taken the SAT Reasoning. You are expected to complete these examinations as early as possible, but no later than December of your senior year.

FALL APPLICANT CHECKLIST
Aug. 1: Fall admission application opens at universityofcalifornia.edu/apply .
March 1-31: Check your student portal at my.ucmerced.edu to find out your fall 2018 admission decision. May 1: Deadline for first year students admitted for fall to submit their Statement of Intent to Register (SIR). July 1: Final official transcripts must be postmarked or electronically submitted to the Office of Admissions for students admitted for fall. July 15: Final official test scores due at the Office of Admissions for students admitted for fall.
Nov. 1-30: Filing period for fall. Submit your application online by 11:59 p.m. Pacific Time on Nov. 30. Dec. 1-31: Take all of your required tests by December of your senior year.
Jan. 1: Start filing your GPA Verification Form (required for Cal Grant consideration).
March 2: Deadline for applicants for all terms to submit FAFSA, California Dream Act application and GPA Verification Form.
